🌍 AFWITRADE VALUE ADDITION INITIATIVE β€” WEEK 5

🧡 WHAT CAN IT BECOME?

FROM AFRICAN FABRIC TO FINISHED PRODUCTS AND GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES!

Dear AfWITrade Sisters,

Welcome to Week 5 of our seven-week β€œWhat Can It Become?” journey! ❀️

So far, we have explored the possibilities of mangoes πŸ₯, baobab, cassava and African minerals transformed into beautiful jewellery.

This week, we are turning our attention to something that connects African women across generations, cultures and borders.

AFRICAN FABRICS! 🧡✨

Think about the beautiful fabrics we see in our markets, wear during celebrations and use to express our identity.

Kente, kitenge, Ankara-style prints, adire, shweshwe, mud cloth and many more!

But here is our question:

What happens when we stop looking at fabric only as material to sell by the metre and start imagining all the finished products it can become?

πŸ‘— Beautiful ready-to-wear clothing
πŸ‘œ Handbags, laptop bags and accessories
🏑 Cushions, curtains, table runners and home décor
🎁 Gift items and corporate merchandise
πŸ‘Ά Children’s clothing and accessories
🌍 Contemporary fashion and lifestyle collections for African and international markets

Some African women are already creating remarkable products in these sectors. How can we help more women join them, improve their products and reach larger markets?

πŸ’¬ JOIN THE CONVERSATION β€” YOUR TURN!

1️⃣ Where are you joining us from? What is the most popular traditional or locally produced fabric in your country, and what is it called?

2️⃣ What can it become? Apart from clothing, what other beautiful or useful products could women make from these fabrics?

3️⃣ What is already happening in your market? Do you see locally made finished fabric products in shops, hotels or online, or are many of these products imported?

4️⃣ What would make the difference? Do women in your community need better sewing equipment, design skills, finishing techniques, branding, packaging, financing or access to buyers?

5️⃣ Imagine you had the opportunity to create your own product. What would you make, and which African country or international market would you like to sell it in?

πŸ’‘ YOUR IDEAS MATTER!

There are no wrong answers. You do not need to own a fashion business to participate. Your experiences, observations and creative ideas are valuable.

Our goal is not simply to celebrate African fabrics. It is to explore how more African women can transform materials and skills into competitive products, stronger businesses and trade opportunities under the AfCFTA.

Let’s learn from one another!
